Vulnerable Children

JOC 2511Background
Although education is free for the primary school in Mozambique (grade 1 to 7), many children still have no chance to attend school. There are several reasons for that, some children are living on the streets, some are orphans, others belong to families with financial difficult, among other reasons.

In this difficult situation, ADPP has decided to contribute to the Government’s effort to provide education for all by establishing schools for children with the following objectives:

  • To provide education to the children in order to prepare them to be useful men and women in the future and contribute to the social and economic development of their country.
  • To educate children to love the work, the family and the country.
  • To educate under-privileged children to fight for a good future for them and their families.
  • To promote a comprehensive individual and community positive feeling.
  • To conduct the children to a more active and participative life in the school and in the community by introducing modern technologies.
  • To ensure education for more girls in the primary schools through scholarship programs.
  • To provide professional skills for life.

Cidadela das Crianças – Childrens’s Town Maputo.
ADPP is implementing a program for children in vulnerable situations and children living without family care and support like orphans, street children and abandoned children called “Children’s Town Maputo”. The program provides these children opportunity to acquire basic, tertiary and vocational education within an enabling social environment. They get access to engage in various activities and extracurricular programs, helping them to recover and overcome past traumas.

Children’s Town Maputo has integrated many children living in the surrounding communities in the Primary School which is within its ADPP facilities. The project also carries out awareness campaigns in the community about diseases such as Malaria, Cholera, TB and HIV-AIDS.

ADPP also runs a vocational school that delivers skills training and education to children from 1st to 7th classes either as boarding students or as day schooling external students. The school trains them basic skills such as sewing, animal-breeding, sports and culture.   Usually children remain at ADPP- Children’s Town Maputo for 7 years, receiving education and care. However, children living in Children’s Town, many of whom have suffered social traumas, remain longer in the center. Some of these are enrolled in grade 1 when they are 9 years old, sometimes with many learning difficulties.  In such cases, the task is not only to teach in the classroom, but also provide psycho-social support and counselling to help them develop progressive social values in their daily lives.
